“A&P” by John Updike, is a trial of Sammy, a young adult, torn between being a trustworthy employee and a macho hunk. The main character, Sammy, finds himself in a podunk town working a normal nine-to-five job; the only thing that breaks him from his lull is the presence of three law-defying girls in the store. Updike narrates Sammy’s interaction as heart-wrenching and as the story draws to a close readers find out if Sammy will walk away with the girl of his dreams, or a new conception of life.
